About the venue

HISTORY
The current Överås Castle was built in the early 1860s as a residence for the owner James Dickson and his family. James Dickson belonged to a family that had moved here from Scotland at the beginning of the century. Most of this family acquired great fortunes but donated large amounts for that time to various social, scientific and artistic purposes here in Gothenburg, and several of them played a significant role in the municipal and cultural life of the city and the country. Many famous people have been to parties at Överås Castle with the distinguished family.

A HAUNTED CASTLE
Villa Överås is not only known for its history and architecture – it is also a place surrounded by mystery. Many people testify to strange phenomena such as shadows, unexplained sounds and an unpleasant presence in certain parts of the house.

One of the most famous stories is about a Finnish priest who spent the night alone in the villa. During the night, he is said to have seen a woman in a black dress and veil who suddenly appeared in the room through one of the large windows. The priest left the villa immediately and never returned.

Other stories revolve around a Danish woman who is said to have taken her own life in the attic after being accused of a terrible crime. She has been nicknamed “The Girl in the Attic”, and many who have stayed in the villa say they have heard her footsteps or seen door handles moving as if someone was trying to get out.

The most talked about, however, is the “Black Lady”, a female figure in a long black dress who has been seen walking through the villa. She is sometimes said to stand still and watch visitors before disappearing as quickly as she came. Many who have encountered her describe a feeling of icy cold that accompanies her presence.
